Gudmundsdottir Scores Twice as #20 USAO Extends Unbeaten Streak to 14

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Tuesday night, the No. 20 ranked University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (11-2-5, 6-0-3 SAC) concluded the regular season by extending their unbeaten streak to 14 games with a 2-0 shutout-win at Nelson University (8-7-2, 3-6 SAC). In head-to-head matchups, the Drovers are 9-0 against the Lions in the all-time series, dating to October 2018.

 

Tuesday's contest opened with 28 minutes of scoreless action prior to Dagbjort Gudmundsdottir striking for her 10th goal of the season to give the Drovers the lead. USAO maintained the one-goal advantage going into the break.

 

Following halftime, the Drovers got some insurance in the 68th minute as Gudmundsdottir struck for her second goal of the game. USAO used perfect defense in the final minutes to wrap up their third consecutive shutout and their 10th of the season.

 

As a team, USAO attempted a total of 10 shots, with five being on goal, while Nelson attempted seven shots, four of which were on frame. The Drovers were whistled for three fouls, and the Lions were flagged for four infractions. Nelson had three corner-kicks, in comparison to USAO's two attempts out of the offensive corners.

 

Dagbjort Gudmundsdottir has now scored 11 goals this season, which ranks fourth in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Furthermore, she has caught fire as of late, scoring six goals in the last four games.

 

Ashlyn Lonberg got the start between the pipes for USAO and claimed the 17th shutout of her career and improved her record to 36-5-6. Amongst her SAC peers, she ranks third in save percentage (.821) and goals against average (0.72).

 

The Drovers now head into the postseason as the No. 2 seed in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament with a conference record of 6-0-3.

The top eight teams in the standings qualify for the SAC Tournament, with the top four teams hosting quarterfinal matchups on Nov. 5. The highest remaining seeds will host for the semifinals and finals.

USAO has appeared in the last 10 SAC Tournament Championship games, including each of the last five coming against John Brown University. In total, the Drovers have claimed seven tournament championships in program history (2001, 2002, 2011, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019).

 

WHAT'S NEXT?

The No. 2 seed Drovers will host the quarterfinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament against No. 7 seed Nelson University on Wednesday, Nov. 5. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 PM CT at McLaughlin Field.
