Lonberg and the Drovers Earn Third Consecutive Shutout
WINFIELD, Kan. – Wednesday evening, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (3-2-2, 0-0 SAC) continued their winning ways with a 1-0 triumph on the road at Southwestern College (0-3, 0-0 KCAC). The victory also extended USAO's shutout streak to three games and a total of 319 minutes of in-game action.
The Drovers jumped out to an early lead as Dagbjort Gudmundsdottir scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Daniela Salinas in the 14th minute. Despite several scoring chances the USAO advantage remained at one going into the break.
Following halftime, the Drovers continued to control possession of the ball but were unable to add to their lead. However, their defense was sterling and allowed them to earn the win on the road.
As a team, USAO attempted a total of 30 shots, with 19 being on goal, while Southwestern attempted only two shots, one of which were on target. The Moundbuilders were whistled for five fouls, while the Drovers committed six infractions. SC had zero corner-kicks, in comparison to USAO's 12 attempts out of the offensive corners.
Ashlyn Lonberg got the start between the pipes for USAO and stopped the only shot that came her way, clinching the 12th shutout of her marvelous career. She improves her record to 29-5-3 in the green and gold. The clean sheet is the third in as many games for Lonberg, who is also the reigning SAC Defensive Player of the Week, following last week's pair of shutouts in Colorado against No. 3 College of Idaho and No. 14 Embry-Riddle.
USAO's strength of schedule is very impressive this season, and seven of their opening 10 matchups are against opponents that are ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll. Thus far, they are 2-2-1 overall with wins against LSU Shreveport and No. 3 College of Idaho, and losses against No. 13 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) and RV Hastings (Neb.). The Drovers earned a pair of ties against No. 14 Embry-Riddle and RV Concordia (Neb.). Over the next couple of weeks, they will face No. 23 Columbia (Mo.), and No. 3 John Brown (Ark.). Iron sharpens iron!
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Drovers will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 13 as they host No. 23 Columbia College. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 PM CT at McLaughlin Field.
