Fourth Quarter Struggles Lead to Defeat Against Langston

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Saturday afternoon, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (9-7, 7-5 SAC) struggled late and was dealt a 79-61 loss against Langston University (14-1, 10-1 SAC). 

 

USAO got off to a tremendous start but ultimately suffered the loss after a rough fourth quarter. Throughout the contest, the score was tied six times, and the lead was exchanged four times. 

 

The Drovers used a hot start to outscore the Lions 22-16 in the exciting first quarter. However, the Lions turned things around in the second quarter, outscoring the Drovers 26-17 and Langston held a 42-39 lead at halftime. 

 

Following the break, the teams traded baskets, with USAO narrowly outscoring Langston 17-16, however the Lions remained in the lead for the entire quarter. The Lions controlled a 58-56 lead going into the fourth quarter. Langston dominated USAO in the final 10 minutes of the game, outscoring the Drovers 21-5.

 

USAO's offense closed the game shooting 18-44 (.409) from the field, 5-11 (.455) from beyond the arc, and 20-24 (.833) from the free-throw line. In comparison, Langston University shot 29-64 (.453) from the field, 10-24 (.417) from deep, and 11-17 (.647) from the charity stripe. 

The Drovers scored 18 points in the paint and hauled in 36 rebounds. In comparison, the Lions scored 38 points in the paint and grabbed 31 rebounds. 

USAO committed 22 turnovers, which led to 20 points for LU. Meanwhile, the Lions fumbled the ball 13 times, resulting in 19 points for the Drovers.

USAO was whistled for 21 fouls, while Langston was called for 24 violations.

 

Three Drovers scored in double figures, led by Alexia Corrales' impressive performance. Corrales recorded 16 points on 6-8 shooting from the field, and she also hauled in a team-high of nine rebounds. 

Evangelia Davlakou contributed 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals, while Hannah Harris added 12 points and four rebounds. 

Franka Kraus went 6-6 from the free-throw line and closed with eight points. Ashley Gonzalez scored five points, followed by Madison Hays and Davielis Berroa with three points each. Caroliena Diaz scored one point and grabbed six rebounds. 

 

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Drovers will return to Brisco McPherson Court on Monday, January 13 as they host a double-header against Central Christian College. The women's game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:00 PM CT, followed by the men's game at 6:45 PM CT inside Drover Fieldhouse.
