Late Goal Sinks USAO’s Comeback Attempt

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Saturday afternoon, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (5-5-4, 1-4-1 SAC) surrendered a late goal and suffered a tough 3-2 loss against Wayland Baptist University (6-4-1, 3-2-1 SAC). In head-to-head matchups, the Drovers own a 10-7-1 advantage against the Pioneers since November 2019.

The Drovers controlled the possession of the ball for majority of the opening half, but the Pioneers began to settle in and took control for the final 10 minutes of the half. WBU scored the first goal in the 34^th minute, prior to extending their lead in the 42^nd minute. 

Following halftime, the Drovers trimmed their deficit to one in the 62^nd minute as Callum Scott scored his third goal of the season, assisted by Matija Malenovic. USAO kept the momentum going as they struck for the equalizer in the 77^thminute, off the foot of Gustav Rosenqvist and assisted by Richard Ebongue Bollanga.

Both teams had scoring chances in the closing minutes, but the Pioneers managed to strike for the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. 

As a team, USAO attempted a total of 17 shots, with 10 being on goal, while WBU attempted 18 shots, seven of which were on frame. The Pioneers committed only eight fouls, while the Drovers were whistled for 25 infractions. WBU had four corner-kick, in comparison to USAO's 11 attempts out of the offensive corners.

The Drovers will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 21 as they travel to Central Christian College. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 PM CT in McPherson, Kan.
