MACU Storms Back to Defeat USAO in Five Sets

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Tuesday night, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (7-9, 4-7 SAC) suffered a heart-breaking five-set loss at Mid-America Christian University (12-8, 8-3 SAC). The Drovers have gone to five sets in five of their last six matches and they own a 2-3 record in those extended contests. 

MACU took an early lead in the first set and used that momentum to claim a 25-16 win in the opening set, but the Drovers settled down in the second set and battled their way to a 26-24 victory to even the match at 1-1. USAO continued their impressive play in the third set and took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-22 win. MACU managed to force a fifth set with a 25-15 victory in the fourth set, and narrowly edged the Drovers in the fifth set by a score of 15-13. 

At the conclusion of the match, MACU concluded with 92 total points scored, while USAO finished with 72. The Drover offense closed with 55 kills on a .223 attack percentage, while the Evangels produced 69 kills on a .263 attack percentage. The Drover defense contributed 64 digs and 11.0 total blocks, while the Evangels had 75 digs and 9.0 blocks. MACU scored on 14 aces, while USAO only produced six. 

Isaline Jacqucemyn led the USAO offense as she recorded a season-high of 16 kills on an incredible .400 attack percentage. 

Victoria Southerland and Samantha Perez each contributed 13 kills. Southerland added seven digs and two block assists, while Perez added two aces, three digs, four block assists, and a solo block. 

Gabrielle Gunnoe closed with five kills, followed by Bruna Duarte with four, and Tara Utornik with three.

Madison Garcia distributed 26 assists, along with an ace and five digs, while Kalaya Pierce dished out 19 assists, an ace, and five digs. 

Yaiza Larrauri anchored the defense with 29 digs, followed by Andrea Maldonado with 10 digs.

The Drovers will be back in on Thursday, October 5 as they host Southwestern Christian University at Drover Fieldhouse at 6:00 PM CT.
