USAO Sweeps SAGU to Extend Win Streak to Seven

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Monday afternoon, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (31-14, 17-7 SAC) extended their win streak to seven with a 6-0 victory to sweep the three-game series against Southwestern Assemblies of God University (25-24, 11-13 SAC). On Sunday, the Drovers opened the series with a hard-fought 4-2 victory, followed by a thrilling 12-4 triumph in game two.

 

USAO has dominated the all-time series against SAGU, going 27-5 against the Lions since the series began on March 28, 2014. 

 

The Drovers wasted no time to take the lead on Monday, as Peyton McDowall launched a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. The score remained 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth when USAO scored the final three runs of the game.

 

The Drovers were led by a terrific pitching performance from Kyler Denton. He began the game with five perfect innings, prior to allowing a hit. Denton ended up going 8.0 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and one walk, while striking out two batters. Denton improved his record to 7-1 and owns a 3.72 earned run average with 38 strikeouts in 55.2 innings of work this season. 

Hagen Earls recorded the first two outs of the ninth inning, prior to Sam Replogle coming in to record the final out of the game.

 

As a team, USAO reached the bases on nine hits and five walks, while SAGU tallied only three hits and four walks. Neither team committed an error on defense. 

 

The USAO offense was led by a trio of multi-hit performances from Gage Ninness, Christopher Martinez, and Peyton McDowall. Ninness finished 2-3 with a run scored, and two runs batted in, while McDowall went 2-3 with a double, a homer, and three runs batted in. Martinez finished 2-4 with a run scored. 

Gavin Machado went 1-4 with a run batted in, while Ian Ortiz went 1-3 with a run scored. Devin Alvarez also singled in the win. 

 

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Drovers will open the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday, May 3 and will be the No. 3 seed and they will host No. 5 Wayland Baptist University. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 PM CT at Bill Smith Ballpark in Chickasha, Okla.
