Drovers Come Up Short in Series Finale at SAGU

WAXAHACHIE, Texas. – Sunday afternoon, the No. 19 ranked University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (10-10, 0-3 SAC) closed out the three-game series with a tough 4-3 loss at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (17-5, 3-0 SAC). 

The Drovers got off to a hot start and took an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, but the Lions immediately responded with a run of their own.

The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the third when SAGU was able to knot the score at 2-2.

Neither team was able to break the tie until the top of the seventh, when Christopher Martinez launched a solo-homerun to put the Drovers back in the driver's seat. However, the Lions immediately responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 4-3 lead.

The Drovers rallied in the top of the ninth but came up short and left the bases loaded without pushing across the tying run.

Reed Butz got the start on the mound for USAO and delivered 4.1 innings of work. Butz surrendered two runs on seven hits, while striking out four batters.

Boone Lasater relieved Butz in the bottom of the fifth inning and went on to pitch the next 1.2 innings. Lasater allowed zero runs on one hit.

Hagen Earls and Nolan Gagnon combined to pitch the seventh inning, followed by Alden Norquist in the eighth inning.

As a team, Science & Arts compiled six hits, while SAGU produced ten.

Peyton McDowall led USAO at the plate, going 2-5 with a pair of doubles, a run scored, and a run batted in.

Christopher Martinez concluded 1-3 with a homerun, two walks, two runs scored, and a run batted in.

Gage Gaunt finished 1-3 with a walk and a run batted in. Will Hoch and Gunnar Hansen each delivered singles in the series finale. 

 

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Drovers will be back in action on Thursday, March 9 as they open a three-game series against Mid-America Christian University. Thursday's series-opener is scheduled for 6:00 PM at Bill Smith Ballpark, followed by a double-header on Saturday, March 11, beginning at 1:00 PM.
